The book I chose to read is called Front of the Class, By Brad Cohen. I've been reading about 4 chapters per week, I decided to go by chapter instead of pages because each chapter tells its own story. I want to finish this book by the week after break.
Chapter 1: Chapter 1 starts off describing Tourette's Syndrome, what it is, what the symptoms are, and specifically what,'Tics", Brad had. As the chapter progresses it describes Cohens' struggles with Tourette's in his early life. Because Tourettes was so unknown he was constantly ridiculed by his father and he was made fun of by other kids. Then Cohen discusses moving into a new house and his worries about going to a new school . Cohen had problems with anxiety when they moved, he really relied in habit and organization and when they moved his whole routine was thrown off.
Chapter 2: In chapter 2 Cohen tells about the doctors that he was seeing and what they all thought about what was going on. There is common theme of his mother being very supportive of his struggles and trying to help him figure out what was wrong with him; while his father was very condescending and impatient with him. Brad describes himself as a normal kid, he had the same interests as a normal kid he just had extra energy and enthusiasm towards everything.
One part of this book that I really like so far is when Cohen describes his troubles reading. "Imagine trying to rad a book or write an arithmetic problem when your face and head and neck are regularly twitching so badly that toy continually lose your place, whether reading or writing", Cohen paints a great picture of what it is like trying to read or write while dealing with Tourette's syndrome. I like this part so much because i can really relate to it no matter how much I want to read something I find it very hard to concentrate and keep my place.
The goal of this boo is to spread awareness of Tourette's Syndrome.
I am looking forward to reading this book because of how much I can relate to it. i am hoping that I can make it through the book with out too much trouble.
